This project involved creating packaging for a tea brand called Dark Night, a product specifically designed to promote restful sleep using ingredients like black sesame lettuce and chamomile. The brand’s name and identity revolved around themes of sleep and relaxation, and the packaging needed to reflect these qualities, combining a sense of warmth with a dreamlike feel.

Project Goal
The primary objective was to design packaging that visually conveyed the brand’s message of providing a “peaceful night.” The challenge was to create a sense of coziness and tranquility while incorporating a soft, storybook-like illustration style. The design needed to communicate the essence of sleep and dreams at a glance while maintaining a clean and simple look, especially for the tea bags, in order to balance design with manufacturing costs.
Design Journey
While the brand’s vision called for an illustration-driven design, one of the key challenges was that illustration is not my primary design focus. However, I embraced the challenge by exploring ways to incorporate a dreamy, whimsical feel through alternative design methods. I envisioned using clip art to depict a person resting their head on their hand, with flowing hair symbolizing the dream-like state, which became the focal point for the packaging. The design process also required careful consideration of color usage, as the brand’s signature Dark Navy color had to dominate the packaging while still maintaining a soft gradient effect to evoke a sense of calm.
Design Solution
To stay true to the brand’s request for an illustration-like feel, I created a combination of clip art and gradient effects to depict a comforting dream scene. The deep Dark Navy color was used as the primary background, with subtle gradients to soften the overall appearance, giving the packaging a gentle, nighttime atmosphere. For the tea bags, a minimalist design was chosen, using a limited color palette to control manufacturing costs while ensuring the use of the precise Pantone color. The side of the packaging detailed key marketing points, enhancing the brand’s credibility and consumer trust. This blend of functionality and creative expression allowed the packaging to meet both aesthetic and practical requirements.
